Day 2 of 365 - getting ready for church tomorrow - find your rainbow pin

One of the reasons that change happens so slowly, is that those of us who are ready for change are nervous to let others know that change is what we hope for. I think this is especially true when it comes to letting people know that we are ready for a United Methodist Church that fully welcomes and celebrates LGBTQ people.

One simple and relatively subtle way to let folks know you are supportive of an inclusive UMC is to wear a rainbow pin, ribbon or button on a Sunday morning. You don't have to say anything at first if you don't want to, no need to draw attention to it. But, if you've not worn one before it is likely that someone might ask you why you are wearing it. That is your opportunity to speak up and let them know why you hope for a UMC that is inclusive of LGBTQ people.

Later during this year of posts I'll add some information that will help you craft the story you will tell about your journey to becoming affirming of LGBTQ people. For now, state your hope simply, don't necessarily try to persuade the other person to agree with you, just let them know your hopes and leave it at that.

Action: Get ready for church tomorrow - find your rainbow pin, or ribbon, and put it somewhere you will remember it in the morning as you are leaving for church. If you don't have one, let me know and I'll mail one to you. Of course, it won't arrive in time for this week, but you'll be ready for next week 😊
