Day 15 of 365 - getting brave - starting the conversation

Sometimes the biggest hurdle to leap is the first one… how do you start the conversation? Let’s say you’ve been following our step by step approach this week…

1. You decided that you need to get braver and start telling some others in your church that you hope for a UMC that is inclusive and fully affirming of LGBTQ people.

2. You identified a friend or two in your congregation who think the same as you and you are going to get coffee together to make plans.

3. You made a list of the people who, while maybe not on the same page as you, you think they might be open to a conversation about this, and you decided on who to approach first.

4. You starting thinking about and preparing your story, and maybe made plans to practice the story with your friends.

And so we arrive at today, and Sunday is coming up soon and you’ve decided to have a conversation with a friend about your hopes for the UMC. The question is… how do you start?

Here are some ideas...

  1. Ask if they got a chance to read about the latest Council of Bishops meeting.

  2. Ask them what they felt about it, did it give them hope or cause for concern?

  3. Ask them what their hopes are for the called General Conference 2019.

  4. Express your hopes and one reason for them.

Action: Read up on the latest news from the Council of Bishops so that you are ready for the conversation.
